I used to work in the private sector before forsaking wealth and health for a more rewarding life in Africa. I am always slightly bemused by those who consider me even more virtuous for giving up the fat pay cheques, when those friends and colleagues who never even ventured into that world, and still cannot afford to buy a house of their own, deserve rather more sympathy. I now work somewhere in continental Africa, but still sometimes longs for the simpler, yet emptier life back home. When I was younger I wanted to be an astronaut, and only ended up in conservation and development by a pretty amazing set of chance happenings and coincidences, but don’t regret it at all. At night I like the fact that I can see the Milky Way from my little garden (when it’s not cloudy) but still only know about three constellations.
